The Roman Empire had first emerged as one of the leading Mediterranean powers back in the 4th century BC. The Roman Empire began expanding eastward after their defeat of the Macedonian army under Alexander the Great at the Battle of Pydna in 168 BC, and eventually took control of most of Western Europe and Northern Africa. During its great height, the Roman Empire controlled over 5 million square miles of land, making it by far one of the largest empires ever created. Before they reached this height, there was a long period known as The Punic Wars from 264 BC to 146 BC when Rome fought Carthage for dominance in North Africa. In 146 BC, Carthage was defeated and Rome controlled much more territory than it did previously.

The History of Rome is long and rich with many cultures contributing to its growth. Some of the main contributors were the Greeks and Assyrians. These civilizations gave Rome their major contributions in government and architecture. The Romans also conquered many territories and took them under control bringing them into their empire. The Roman Empire and also the Roman Republic were created by Romulus, who was named after the god Latinius. He was the son of Mars, god of war. His father, Mars, fought with Spartacus for control of Rome. When he defeated him, he decided to name his son after him. All but one child survived their births. Romulus later became king of Rome and founded its first senate. The other senate members set up the City Council to rule over Rome. There was a system of government in Rome that worked to prevent corruption. This original system of government was later changed over the years as the city grew and as Rome’s rulers made changes.

After Romulus’ assassination, his brother, Remus, became king. However he wasn’t a good leader and during his reign, Rome was almost destroyed by invasion from neighboring tribes known as the Sabines. The Sabines were a tribe in ancient Italy who lived near Rome. The Romans had a treaty with their neighbor in which they shared their land in return for being protected from being attacked by the other tribe at night. During this time, the Sabines were becoming more powerful and the Romans were becoming weaker in numbers and their power.
